Ingredient Spotlight:
The natural
skin care trend
has many curious
about the benefits of CBD

All aboard the natural skin care train! Calling all natural, plant-based and sustainably sourced ingredients! If you are hoping on the natural skin care trend, here is one ingredient that has continued to make headlines: CBD! Still quite a new ingredient in the skin care industry without much research and evidenced based science to back any concrete claims, that has not stopped brands from marketing this natural plant extract as the latest and greatest to hit the beauty shelves. So what exactly is CBD?

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol oil (CBD) is an extract composed of over 100 different cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant that does not contain any trace of psychoactive properties. Not to get it confused with THC, which is a different type of extract from the cannabis plant that does cause an individual to experience psychedelic effects. In 2018, the Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act, making hemp derived and CBD products with less than 0.3% THC federally legal. Since then, CBD can be found in oils, supplemental capsules and gummies, and now in beauty and skin care products. Talk about au naturel. The skin care industry has been going through a drastic transformation and taking a dive into more unconventional ingredients is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discovering new ways to treat, heal and improve our skin! What can CBD do for our skin?

What can CBD do for skin?

CBD, the naturally occurring chemical compound found in the cannabis plant, is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce inflammation for skin conditions such as acne, eczema and rosacea; help regulate oil production associated with clogged pores; and help neutralize free radical damage. Acne is one of the most commonly occurring skin conditions. CBD actually contains compounds that can help reduce oil, anti-inflammatory properties to reduce acne swelling and anti-microbial properties that can help prevent bacterial acne from forming. For my dry skin beauties out there, CBD can also help soothe skin by reducing irritation and target signs of dehydration by moisturizing the skin barrier. In fact, CBD is highly recommended for those with sensitive skin because it can help soothe stressed out skin without any of the harsh side effects that can come from other active ingredients. So CBD can help treat a plethora of skin conditions. Sounds like another multipurpose and multi-beneficial potion to me. Meaning it saves both time and money, making skin care a luxury everyone can indulge in!

CBD vs Hemp Seed oil

What about hemp seed oil? Where hemp seed oil is derived from the cannabis seed, CBD extract is derived from the cannabis flower, stem and leaves. Both natural ingredients have beneficial effects to the skin, however, they are not the same.

There are still many lingering questions about the efficacy and long term benefits of using CBD in skin care. The lack of research and regulation of the CBD industry, mixed marketing messages, and a whole lot of mislabeling, has led to some confusion over whether or not CBD can produce beneficial effects for skin care. But don’t knock it till you try it for yourself. The rise in natural skin care has many curious about CBD based skin products. Interested in CBD skin care? Check out these products!
